Shambala Silang: A Living Earth Sculpture in Cavite

Nestled in the rolling hills of Silang, Cavite, Shambala Silang is a scenic retreat and a breathing work of art by visionary creator, Riza Matibag Muyot.

Entering this two-hectare property is a discovery in itself. From the moment guests arrive, they are greeted by a fortress-inspired entrance, a solid stone gateway adorned with Ifugao-carved faces that set the tone for the journey ahead.

A 150-meter pathway, lined with bamboo, stone sculptures, and rare blooms, serves as a portal into a world where every detail is intentional. It is evident that every element is a tribute to Filipino heritage and craftsmanship.

Shambala Silang features a web of terraces sculpted on a hill. Its slopes are adorned with flowers and indigenous plants that were carefully selected to mimic the breathtaking panorama of the Cordilleras, a region close to Riza’s heart.

But arriving at such beauty was a journey for Riza. Combining her love for the Cordilleras, the art, and the beauty of creating landscapes, she carved the land with the help of skilled artists and workers from the northern region.

“A piece of land can also be seen as a work of art, especially if the landowner worked on it using her skill and imagination to create a thing of beauty,” she shares.

A Glimpse of the Ifugao Highlands

One of the most remarkable elements of Shambala Silang is the Ifugao Village, which integrates cultural history into its natural surroundings.

Riza transported six authentic Ifugao huts from Banga-an, Mayoyao, Sagada, and Bontoc. Each one carefully reconstructed and furnished to retain its northern authenticity.

As guests walk down the stone steps, they arrive at a dap-ay, a circular open space bordered by stone slabs. Dap-ay is a sacred gathering place for rituals and communal decision-making in traditional Ifugao culture. At Shambala, it serves as a reminder of the deep-rooted traditions of the Cordilleras.

Further ahead, an amphitheater carved from the hillside offers a breathtaking venue where performances and events unfold against the backdrop of nature’s grandeur.

The Journey Between Worlds

At the heart of Shambala Silang lies Tawid Gallery, the first museum and art gallery in Silang. Originally a greenhouse, this space has been transformed into a tribute to Philippine indigenous arts and traditions.

The gallery’s name, Tawid, signifies a transition—a bridge from the physical world to the divine. Each artwork and artifact is meticulously placed, guiding visitors through a deeply symbolic journey.

“Art can be that boat that helps us to cross over, our culture and traditions the bridge that connects us to the world of the spirit and makes us whole,” Riza reflects.

The collection, which includes pieces from her personal archives, celebrates the diverse expressions of Filipino artistry. For her, it is a space where the past and present coexist, where the essence of ancestral wisdom is preserved for future generations.

Rest and Rejuvenation

Beyond its artistic and cultural significance, Shambala Silang is a place of healing. Its tranquil gardens, nature nooks, and serene atmosphere offer an escape from modern life’s demands.

Guests are encouraged to immerse themselves in the stillness of nature. You can imagine yourself reading under a tree, writing in solitude, or savoring a quiet cup of coffee.

Meanwhile, Singkaban Bar, crafted by Bulakenyo artisans, offers a selection of refreshing drinks.

Riza’s deep appreciation for the land extends beyond aesthetics. She envisions Shambala as a self-sustaining haven, with an upcoming Plant Center featuring her personal collection of flora. Additionally, a carinderia/bike stop will cater to cycling enthusiasts who frequent Silang’s routes.

A Dream Realized

For Riza, Shambala is the fulfillment of a deeply personal journey. What began as a private retreat evolved into a shared sanctuary, a place where others could also find solace, inspiration, and renewal.

Since opening its doors to the public in January 2021, Shambala Silang has welcomed visitors by appointment, offering a rare chance to step into a world where nature and artistry intertwine.

“People need open spaces and a natural environment,” Riza emphasizes. “We need to connect and reconnect with ourselves, with others, our environment, and our roots—the arts, culture, spirituality, and nature are key.”

Whether as a wedding venue, a space for cultural exhibits, a restful bed and breakfast, or a personal retreat, Shambala Silang is a living proof to the power of art and nature. It is a place where the land itself tells a story. One of resilience, beauty, and the enduring connection between humanity and the earth.

For those seeking a sanctuary that nurtures both body and soul, Shambala Silang is an earth sculpture where nature and imagination create a timeless work of art.
