Intramuros unveils Summer Festival

The historic walls of Intramuros set the stage for an intimate media gathering today as the Intramuros Administration (IA) revealed details of its upcoming inaugural Summer Festival. Set for Saturday, April 26, 2025, the announcement marks a significant evolution for Manila’s heritage district.

During the press launch, IA officials led by administrator Atty. Joan Padilla, outlined their vision for transforming the Walled City from a purely historical destination into a dynamic cultural hub that appeals to contemporary audiences while honoring its rich past.

The event, coinciding with the IA’s 46th founding anniversary, aims to create a sustainable model that benefits both tourism and local businesses.

Media attendees were given a comprehensive walkthrough of the festival’s programming, which spans from sunrise wellness activities to evening concerts. The day will begin with a 7:30 a.m. Zumba session led by fitness coaches Jim and Toni Saret, followed by a parade featuring student performers in both traditional and creative costumes.

The press briefing highlighted how the festival will utilize various spaces within the district, with Plaza Moriones in Fort Santiago serving as the main venue. Guests were particularly interested in the pop-up market that will stretch along Gen. Luna Street, Fort Santiago, and the Riverwalk, featuring local food vendors and artisans.

One of the most discussed announcements was the launch of the Intramuros Passport initiative. Priced at ₱350, this program grants access to five major heritage sites with no expiration date, aiming to encourage deeper exploration of the district while creating a sustainable revenue stream for preservation efforts.

The media launch included details about the Sinag Concert, which will feature Filipino acts including Itchyworms, Over October, and Earl Agustin, performing at Plaza Moriones from 6 to 10 p.m. on festival day.

Partnerships with the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) represented by CCP president Kaye Tinga and Philippine Ballet Theatre represented by its president Marilou Magsaysay,  were formalized during the event through a ceremonial signing, signaling the revival of the Intramuros Evenings performance series from the 1990s.

This summer kickoff is just the beginning of a year-round cultural calendar including the Grand Santacruzan on May 23 (coinciding with the soft opening of the Intramuros Convention Center), Likha Fair in June, and Fiesta de Intramuros in September.

The Intramuros Summer Festival is positioned not just as a one-time event, but as the beginning of a new approach to cultural programming within the historic district—balancing heritage preservation with contemporary relevance and economic vitality.
