Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery (BNM MAG) presents ‘GERAK BAYANG: The Art of Storytelling’, a showcase combining performance art, visual aesthetics, and literary creativity under one roof. From 19 August 2023 to 28 January 2024, this exhibition will redefine artistic boundaries and immerse visitors in a realm of imagination and collaboration like never before.

GERAK BAYANG is driven by the insight that blending art forms echoes the harmony needed in organizations. Much like an organization, this exhibition underscores the significance of diversity in talents and expertise. The mesmerizing shadow puppet performance demonstrates this idea. Just as a diverse team collaborates to produce a seamless performance, an organization requires a set of skills and perspectives to thrive.

GERAK BAYANG Exhibition

BNM MAG Director Noreen Zulkepli said, “GERAK BAYANG is more than just an artistic display. It embodies the philosophy that creativity serves as a catalyst for agility and inclusion. The works offer different perspectives, reflecting the power and potential of cultivating ideas, viewpoints, and approaches. Through this, the exhibition showcases how embracing diverse creative approaches can lead to richer, more inclusive outcomes – a valuable lesson applicable both in the art world and the broader context of society.”

This exhibition presents a fusion of artistic prowess, uniting 39 established and young artists who are contributing 144 artworks. The lineup features renowned names like Nik Zainal Abidin, Long Thien Shih, Ismail Mat Hussin, Syed Thajudeen, Mad Anuar, Chang Fee Ming, Adeputra, Masnoor Ramli Mahmud, Haris Abadi, Nik Husyaidie, and Ismail Awi.

Visitors will witness a rich diversity of artistic expressions. These range from creations in various forms including buffalo or cowhide, paper, canvas, and through the incorporation of cutting-edge new media techniques.

Don’t miss the chance to take home a piece of the experience. GERAK BAYANG offers a special array of merchandise inspired by the exhibition. Free public programs such as artist-led art workshops, art talks, puppet-making workshops, and shadow puppet performances will also be available to engage audiences of all ages.
